Response from Transport Canada
Response from Transport Minister Omar Alghabra
April 23/2021
FLARM Legislation did not receive Government favour. As per Minister Alghabra, FLARMs will continue to be supported by the Soaring Association of Canada and endorsed by Transport Canada, however gliders will retain their preferential transponder exemption status. It will still be left to the judgement of the individual clubs to determine whether they will implement and properly maintain ACAS/FLARMs (an aid only to the limited see and avoid principle) or not, and to ensure the best care and safety practices for their students and members.
It is easier to prevent than fix something, and every student and member’s safety should be regarded with the respect and seriousness that it deserves.
We would like to thank everyone behind the scenes and all the petitioners who believe that this change is necessary and is the right thing to do.
